Organization and mission
  1. Organization

In order to promote and enhance the high quality extra virgin olive oil sector, was launched the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest®.

The international contest, which takes place in the Municipality of Palmi (Italy), is organized by the Association EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest, based in Palmi (RC), on behalf of EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest®.

 

  1. Mission

EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® is an international competition organized to achieve the following objectives:

  • award the best extra virgin olive oils and the condiment (Flavoured oils) from all over the world entered in the contest;
  • promote among consumers the benefits of extra virgin olive oil in a healthy diet;
  • internationally promote the exceptional qualities of extra virgin olive oil produced in various countries;
  • promote and give greater visibility to the extra virgin olive oil and flavoured oil market in Italy, in the Mediterranean area as well as in  the rest of the world;
  • explain the advantages of the use of extra virgin olive oil in the Mediterranean diet;
  • promote the winning producers among buyers, consumers, international markets and in the various media;
  • increase the consumption of high-quality extra virgin olive oil internationally.

 

In addition, in the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® Competition:

  • the products competing will be judged and rewarded by a professional world competition on extra virgin olive oil;
  • all the samples will be submitted to tasting by unyielding tasters judges from all over the world, led by the international panel leader Antonio G. Lauro;
  • the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® trophies will strengthen the winning brands in international markets, bringing unique privileges, being EVO IOCO International Olive Oil Contest® is the right way to present the winning products to the most important distributors and importers in the world;
  • affirming the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® will allow you to include your extra virgin olive oil and condiments in the special guide in English “EVO IOOC Guide 2019 Buyers Edition” which will be distributed in paper form in international events and sent in digital format to the most important distributors and importers in the world;
  • An absolute special trophy will be awarded to all the categories of products in competition (Conventional, Organic, PDO / PGI, Monovarietale, Blend, Condiment);
  • claiming the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® will entitle you to 9 points valid for the world ranking by WREVOO (World Ranking Extra Virgin Olive Oil);
  • you can surprise consumers with certificates of excellence (Gold and Silver medals) issued by EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest®;
  • all winning bottles will be able to boast the quality stikers (Gold and Silver Medals) issued by the organization;
  • each product in competition will compete with the best EVO oils and condiments in the world.

  1. Schedule

The EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® will follow the following schedule.

December 1, 2018: competition officially opens to entries to EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest®. From this moment, and until 17 May 2019, it is possible:

  • enter samples to the competition;
  • pay the entry fee(s);
  • ship competing samples to EVO IOOC;
  • send business information useful for entering the winners in the EVO IOOC Guide 2019 Buyers Edition.

 

May 17, 2019: deadline. Last day for all entries. All samples must be received by this date in the contest site (Italy), otherwise they will be excluded from the competition.

 

May 20 to 23, 2019: EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® sample evaluation. A panel of experienced judges will evaluate and classify each sample according to the dictums of the IOC (international Olive Council).

 

May 25, 2019: Winners Announcement (Gold and Silver Medals)

 

June 1, 2019: EVOlution events, EVOexpo, EVOkids, EVOteen, Winners Announcement (Best in Class, Best of Country, Special Awards) and Awards Ceremony.

 

June 15, 2019: publication of certificates (Diplomas) on the official website of the competition www.evo-iooc.com

 

  1. EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® participating products

The Contest is exclusively open to extra virgin olive oils and condiment (flavoured EVOOs) in the following categories (Northern and Southern Hemisphere):

EVOOs

  1. A) Conventional Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
  2. B) Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

The certificate issued by the inspection body must be enclosed.

  1. C) PDO/PGI Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Protected Designation of Origin and the Protected Geographical Indication).

The certificate issued by the inspection body must be enclosed.

The samples of Extra Virgin Olive Oil may also be:

  1. D) Single varietal Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Monovarietal extra virgin olive oil).

The varieties which may enter the competition must be included in the Olive Germoplasm – Olea Europea.L. data bank which can be consulted at http://www.oleadb.eu which is constantly updated and contains the information available on the varieties cultivated worldwide.

  1. E) Coupage Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Blend of two or more varieties).

 

Condiments (Flavoured EVOOs)

The “Condiments based on extra virgin olive oil”, variously flavored, are also eligible for participation in the competition:

  1. F) Condiments (Flavoured EVOOs).

In the categories indicated, all the products over the world may compete in the categories above provided they are bottled and bear an official brand label compliant with the laws of the country of origin. Participation to the contest implies accepting the rules and regulations stated here and the decisions of the judging panel which are final.

 

The extra virgin olive oil oils presented in the contest must be accompanied by:

  • chemical analysis certificate issued by an accredited testing lab (ISO 17025 compliant) indicating free fatty acids, peroxides, absorption characteristics (K232nm, K270nm, and ΔK), etc..
  • panel test issued by an accredited testing lab (IOC, EU, etc,.) or self-certification of the fruity, bitter and pungent category;
  • only in the case of organic production and/or PDO/PGI, the certificate issued by the control body must be enclosed.

 

The condiments (Flavoured EVOOs) presented in the contest must be accompanied by:

  • chemical analysis certificate issued by an accredited testing lab (ISO 17025 compliant) indicating free fatty acids, peroxides, absorption characteristics (K232nm, K270nm, and ΔK), etc..

 

Relating to the batch of the sample entered and dated within 180 days prior to submission.

Only in the case of extra virgin olive oils, to be considered as extra virgin olive oils, the samples must be with the median of the defects equal 0 (Md= 0) and the median of the fruity attribute is above 0 (Mf> 0). All parameters must be within the limits imposed by IOC (IOC/T.20) and the Commission Regulation (EEC) No 2568/91 amended.

 

  1. Participation

The EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® is open to all individual producers, olive oil mills, producer cooperatives and cooperative associations, bottlers, export companies and any type of business enterprise that produces, bottles and trades in branded extra virgin olive oil. Proof of provenance of all the samples must be guaranteed, on request of the organizing committee, with appropriate documentation.

All submitted samples must bear an official brand label compliant with the laws of the country of origin.

Moreover the samples of extra virgin olive oil must:

  • come from a single homogeneous batch of at least 500 liters;
  • be bottled in appropriate bottles/containers containing 1 liter or less;
  • be accompanied by certification from an accredited laboratory (Chemical analysis and Panel test);

The condiments must:

  • come from a single homogeneous batch of at least 100 liters;
  • be accompanied by certification from an accredited laboratory (Chemical analysis and Panel test);

 

Any derogations from the rule (only for the quantity of the homogeneous batch required), accompanied by a motivated request, may be approved only by the President of the Contest.

 

  1. Registration

Registration to the EVO IOOC – EVO International Olive Oil Contest®: participants will need to fill out the entry form on the website before the May 17, 2019 (deadline).

  1. B) CONDIMENTS (Flavoured EVOOs)

Regular Booking (booking after February 1, 2019 and before May 17, 2019):

For only one sample submitted € 220,00

Multiple registration:

Up to 4 samples: € 200.00 each

All tuition fees must be paid to the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® at the time of completing the participation form in the manner described in the following 8) Payment methods.

All participants will receive via email to the address provided:

  • the progressive registration number to be reported in all subsequent communications;
  • an entry confirmation;
  • request for any changes and/or additions to the application form.

Entry fees are non refundable in the case of samples that are non-compliant or received by the organization after the May 17, 2019 deadline.

The Organization reserves the right to cancel the event. In this case all entry fees will be refunded but samples will NOT be returned.

 

* In the case of payment of the registration fee through the “PayPal” payment system, you will need to add the costs foreseen by the payment system for the transaction.

On-line Guide
  1. Guide

At the same time as entering the competition (see 6. Registration) it will be possible to enter data (information and high resolution photography), for the inclusion in the EVO IOOC Guide 2019 Buyers Edition. All winner olive oil and flavoured EVOOs of the EVO IOOC – EVO International Olive Oil Contest® will be highlighted in a special guidebook for Buyers which will be distributed at International events. EVO IOOC will devote one page to each winner with a complete and correct technical card received before May 17, 2019. Incomplete technical cards or photos not compliant to instructions are not guaranteed to be included in the guide.

  1. Sample shipping

Producers must ship samples to our offices in Italy specifying on the address “To the Attention of Ufficio Concorso EVO IOOC” before May 17, 2019. For each sample:

  • 3 (three) bottles or other proper containers containing either 500ml or 750 ml or 1l or 4 bottles or other proper containers containing 250 ml or 6 bottles or other proper containers containing 100 ml. All bottles, or containers sent, must have a valid labeling in accordance with laws in the country of origin.
  • Chemical analysis certificate issued by an accredited testing.
  • Invoice with a nominal value of € 3.00 per bottle, or else labeling sample packaging “SAMPLE WITH NO COMMERCIAL VALUE-NOT FOR SALE”. All bottles or containers must bear an official brand label compliant with the laws of the country of origin.
  • only in the case of organic production and/or PDO/PGI, the certificate issued by the control body must be enclosed.

The participating company declares that the samples registered in the competition is part of the lot declared in the entry form.

Contest organizers are NOT to be held responsible for the total or partial loss of samples or any chemical/physical or organoleptic changes to the samples or any breakage or loss of the samples prior to their delivery nor for late shipments or delays.

Organizers are NOT responsible for any shipping costs including sanitary and customs duties. In no case will EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® pay any extra  shipping costs. We recommend  shipping “door to door” preferably with a freight forwarder or courier and “Delivery Duty Paid“.

Samples rating. The jury. Results and prizes
  1. Sample evaluation

After verifying all documentation pertaining to each sample (certification, labels, laboratory tests) as well as the entry documents and the conformity to current legislation, the sample will be placed in its specific category. The assessment sheet used for EVOOs will be based on the IOC sheet and graphically modified by EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® and will be based on a 0 to 100 point system. The assessment sheet used for Flavoured EVOOS is developed by the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® technical committee, and will be based on a 0 to 100 point system.

 

  1. The Jury

The President and a technical committee will select the jury and commission members. The number of judges tasting the samples will depend on the number of samples entered in the contest. Each Tasting panel is formed by 4 members: three judges and an responsible.

The President (Panel Leader) and the General Manager of EVO IOOC will preside the contest.

To ensure the maximum level of transparency, the EVO IOOC judges will not evaluate olive oils or flavoured oils from any company in which they or any of their relatives are involved, be it as producers, bottlers or distributors, etc..

To this end, all judges must sign a declaration in which s/he denies or declares involvement with companies in the oil growing, milling or bottling sectors. In the case that a judge does have connections s/he will be assigned oil samples where there is no conflict of interest.

 

  1. Results

All winners will be notified on the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® website (www.evo-iooc.com) on the results of the contest and will receiveby e-mail a notification.

This will be the only official communication that a sample has won a prize and states the quality of the product as recognized by the panel of the EVO IOOC contest.

Any other form of advertising or communication of the results must be considered “temporary” awaiting the final communication on the official contest website www.evo-iooc.com

Any specific information regarding the judge’s assessment identifying organoleptic qualities as well as any negative qualities and scoring of the samples may be requested in writing by the producer.

There are two distinct categories of awards in the EVO IOOC. see 13. Awards.

Extra virgin olive oil:

– Best in Class, Special Award and Best of Country*;

– First class awards** (Gold Medal, Silver Medal).

 

Condiments (Flavoured EVOOs):

– Special Award*;

– First class awards** (Gold Medal, Silver Medal).

 

*To the absolute winners of each single category, a trophy or medal will be awarded to the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® and a certificate that will validate the prize won.

Trophies will be presented at the awards ceremony to the official representative of the  producer or his delegate. The awards may also be picked up within a few days after the ceremony, in alternative they may be shipped on written request of the producer and at his entire expense to the address provided on the entry form.

 

** All winners of other awards will receive a certificate validating the award and specifying the category of the award. This certificate is downloadable from the official contest website after 15 days from the end of the contest.

The contest EVO IOOC – EVO International Olive Oil Contest® is offering awards in various categories which will be divided into Best in Class, Best of Country, Special Awards, and First Class Awards (Gold & Silver Medals).

EVO IOOC Gaetano Avallone dedicated to Gaetano Avallone: for the best monovarietal extra virgin olive oil from Italy.

EVO IOOC Best Of Area, special award to the best extra virgin olive oil of a single region or area which is represented by at least 25 samples in contest.

 

Best Of Country.

EVO IOOC Best Of Country, special award to the best extra virgin olive oil of a single country which is represented by at least 25 samples in contest.

For the purpose of encouraging the promotion of the prize, the organization will provide, upon request of the company the high definition file of the sticker affixing the category of prize won (Best in Class/Special Awards/Gold Medal/Silver Medal) to be printed and put on the label. The price of the file with the sticker that confirm the prize category won will be announced later. You can request the file directly to the organization by filling out the appropriate form on the website or by writing to the e-mail address: info@evo-iooc.com

Winners will be permitted to affix the adhesive labels supplied by the Contest Organization ONLY to bottles containing the same oil (same harvest, olive varietals and production batch) and in the same packaging as the winning sample. Any other use of the Contest Award label is not permitted.

 

Note.

At the same extra virgin olive oil that will get the highest score in more than one of the categories in competition, will be awarded only one prize, following this order:

  • Best International (North & South Hemisphere)
  • Best Organic (North & South Hemisphere)
  • Best POD/PGI (North Hemisphere)
  • Best Monovarietal (North & South Hemisphere) or Best Coupage (North & South Hemisphere)
Legislative provisions and contacts
  1. Terms and Conditions

The Technical Committee of the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest® reserves the right to send samples of the winning products to an independent laboratory for chemical analysis to ensure conformity.

A sample of all winning products (one or more bottles) will remain at the contest site for 30 days after the end of the contest, under the responsibility of the President, in order to be available for further testing.

The samples be freed for promotional activities and advertising for the quality of extra virgin olive oil.

Every single participant company is responsible for the information contained in the entry form and the Technical Committee reserves the right to ascertain its authenticity.

 

DISPUTES: All results and decisions of the judging panel and the EVO IOOC President are final. In no case will samples undergo further tasting. On entering this contest acceptance of this specific fact is implied.

 

It is illegal to copy or to forge the name, logo or winner labels and Award Certificates; these are only available to the winning companies. Offenders will be prosecuted by law.

In case of disputes with the EVO IOOC EVO International Olive Oil Contest®, the parties agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Palmi (Italy) court notwithstanding the nationality of the contestants.

The only official recognized languages for documents concerning the competition are Italian and English.

The Organizing Committee reserves the right to change the above terms and conditions at any time in case of necessity.

*Delivered duty paid (DDP) is a transaction where the seller pays for the total costs associated with transporting goods and is fully responsible for the goods until they are received and transferred to the buyer. This includes paying for shipping costs, export and import duties, insurance and any other expenses incurred during shipping of the goods.
